Project Overview
PocketWeb is an early mobile web browser developed by TECO for the Apple Newton MessagePad in 1994. It was presented at the WWW2 Conference in Chicago, where its accompanying paper received the Best Paper Award. Designed for highly resource-constrained devices, PocketWeb introduced efficient caching and a lightweight management layer, significantly reducing memory requirements compared to contemporary browsers. Later versions added GIF decoding and used proxy services to support additional image formats.
Our Goal
The goal of PocketWeb was to enable practical web browsing on early mobile devices with severe memory and processing limitations by optimizing resource usage and introducing lightweight mechanisms for content delivery and rendering.
